“Avoir de la main” was always considered to be the first quality in a fabric, whether the main was light as muslin, firm as pique or soft as velvet... It is impossible to think of fabric without thinking of the hand, the touch. But in our industrialised, globalised, and unified world, has this not become a historical connotation? While the notion of “handmade” is coming back to the fore, it is time to question the paths it is taking back, as we are certainly not going to go back to weaving machines in every home and there is no future in the hand- knit tracksuit...
