Objectives
- Understand the sub-work that distinguishes tailor-made clothing
- Discover, practice, and master the tailoring techniques to create a structured garment: a part of a bespoke men's jacket
- Create a custom half-front jacket constructed with canvases and learn the technique of making the lapel fall elegantly on the breakline so that it falls naturally along the front edge of the jacket
- Understand men's morphology in order to offer the most suitable style and fabric quality suits and jackets
- Learn to analyze the quality of a finished product
Program
- Introduction to bespoke tailoring :
• differences between men’s bespoke, semi-bespoke and ready to wear
• specificities between existing tailored styles, English style, Italian style, French style, ...
• presentation of the different fabrics mostely used in bespoke tailoring
- Creation of a finished hand-sewn half-front lined jacket with an inner pocket and with topstitching along both the front edge and the lining edge
- Construction and preparation of front and chest canvases :
• positions the canvases
• pad-stitching
• ironing the canvas
- Preparation of front and small side and shaping with the iron
- Attaching the canvases to the garment :
• pad stitch the lapels and positioning the twill tape
• putting the facing in place
- Assemblage of the front, iron the seams, turn the facing and baste the edge of the facing
- Make the inside pocket and adjust the lining to the garment
- Finishing touches like top stitches or inversible stitches and if time permits you will learn to make handmade buttonholes.
Tutor
Catarina Knoch-Mulot is a Master Tailor, passionate about tailoring and haute couture. Her journey began in Sweden, where she trained as a ladies' and gentlemen's tailor. She further honed her skills through studies and work in Denmark and Norway before moving to Paris to advance her career.
In Paris, she worked with prestigious houses such as Smalto, Lanvin, and Cerruti, gaining invaluable experience alongside industry-leading tailors. Since 2018, she has run her own studio, serving both men and women, and that same year earned her Master Tailor diploma in Stockholm.
Her passion extends to teaching at the Institut Français de la Mode. Over six years, she has trained the next generation of gentlemen's tailors in France, contributing to the revival of this timeless craft. At IFM, she teaches specialized courses such as the Certificat de Savoir-Faire for advanced programs and workshops for the Summerschool or professional fashion house staff. She also delivers lectures and leads conferences on advanced tailoring techniques and the craft's rich history.
Certificate
At the end of the program, a Summer School certificate is issued to participants who have attended all courses.
