How to Translate Your Creative Vision into a Three-Dimensional Garment ?
In this program, you will learn the fundamentals of draping by constructing a muslin prototype on a studio bust, then personalizing it based on your artistic inspirations.

This course is ideal for those who want to build a foundational knowledge of draping and apply these basics to their own creative ideas. The exercises completed during the course may be used as part of a portfolio, particularly for students aspiring to join higher education in art, graphic design, or fashion. With a limited number of participants, instructors can adapt to each student's skill level and goals.

This course emphasizes personal research and creative development, with the tangible outcome of producing a finished product. It combines an introduction to technical skills with creative exploration. You will be guided by two professors from the Institut Français de la Mode, each specializing in complementary areas: artistic design and draping.

Objectives

  • Understand the basics of draping and garment design on a studio bust
  • Learn to adapt foundational techniques to your own creative style
  • Use a personal mood board to learn how to convey your creative universe through a cohesive selection of visual references

Program

Week 1:
Study and Creation of a Basic Skirt Prototype

  • Volume creation
  • Draping a half-muslin in 3D on a studio bust
  • Correcting and flattening the muslin
  • Analyzing the relationship between shape and fabric
  • Transforming the basic skirt into a kilt skirt

Week 2:
Trends and Creative Process

  • Understanding how trends work
  • Analyzing an artist’s or designer’s style and creative process
  • Illustrating your own creative world
  • Personalizing the skirt created in Week 1, guided by your own creative inspirations

Tutors

You will be guided by two professors from the Institut Français de la Mode, each specializing in complementary areas: artistic design and draping.


Certificate

At the end of the program, a certificate of participation in the Summer School is issued to participants who have attended all courses.

To register, simply fill in the online form and pay the required deposit. On receipt of the online form, the application is studied by the Summer School team. Once the application has been accepted, an email is sent specifying the payment schedule for the balance of the registration fee. If the application is not accepted, the deposit will be refunded.

How can I apply?

On reception of the application form, the application is reviewed by the Summer School team. Once the application is accepted, the participant will receive a confirmation email with the instructions for payment (deposit and balance of the registration fee).

Please note that registration is confirmed only after payment of the deposit.

Financement de vos études

Can I apply for a scholarship?

IFM scholarships are available thanks to the generous sponsorship of the IFM Foundation. They are reserved for High-School Summer programs only.

Scholarships are available in a limited number and are need-based. They may cover up to 75% of tuition fees and are restricted to one demand per year and per participant. In case of registration to several programs, one grant only can be given.

Campus

Are travel and accommodation costs included?

Travel and accommodation costs in Paris are the responsibility of each participant. IFM can recommend, upon request, different options for accommodation and help foreign students in organizing their stay.

Practical information

What are the registration procedures for foreign students?

Participants from outside the European Union must ensure, if necessary, that they have a valid visa for France. Upon request and after full payment of the course, IFM will send the participant a letter confirming registration in order to support the visa application. IFM will also send you a visa guide upon request.

Important: 15 calendar days are necessary for consular authorities to treat visa request, sometimes longer in the high season.

If you are non-French you must ensure you are covered by your health insurance during your stay.
